Product Description

6F5 is a selected granular capping material compliant with the UK Specification for Highway Works (Series 600). Usually produced from recycled crushed concrete/hardcore (with brick/asphalt content within spec), it’s a well-graded “down” material containing fines for interlock and binding. Used to quickly build levels and improve formation prior to laying sub-base (Type 1/Type 3) and pavement layers. Not free-draining; not a finished running surface. Typical uses Capping over weak/variable subgrade before sub-base Bulk fill/formation build-up for roads, yards, compounds Temporary haul roads/working platforms (often topped with a regulating layer or Type 1) Farm tracks and general make-up where spec permits recycled capping Key properties Standard: SHW Series 600 — Class 6F5 Particle size (typical): 0/125 mm (option 0/75 mm to project spec) Behaviour: Binds under compaction; non-free-draining Source: Recycled aggregate (WRAP Quality Protocol/DoC available on request) Coverage guide (approx., compacted bulk density ≈ 2.0 t/m³) 150 mm depth → ~3.3 m²/tonne 200 mm depth → ~2.5 m²/tonne 300 mm depth → ~1.7 m²/tonne Actual yield varies with material, moisture and compaction. Quantity formula Tonnes ≈ (Length × Width × Depth in metres) × 2.0 Installation notes Place in 150–300 mm lifts; compact to project density (e.g., ≥95% MDD) Moisture-condition for best binding; avoid placing in standing water Use a separator geotextile on soft subgrade; consider geogrid where required Finish with Type 1/Type 3 before trafficking/surfacing
