Product Description

6F2 is a selected granular material for capping and bulk engineering fill in accordance with the UK Specification for Highway Works (Series 600). It’s generally a coarser, more economical capping than 6F1, produced from primary crushed rock or compliant recycled aggregate (e.g., crushed concrete/hardcore). The well-graded “down” mix interlocks and binds under compaction, creating a dense, load-bearing platform ready for Type 1/Type 3 and pavement layers. Not free-draining and not a finished running surface. Typical uses Capping weak/variable subgrade prior to sub-base Bulk fill / formation improvement for roads, yards, compounds Temporary haul roads / working platforms (where the spec permits 6F2; often topped with a regulating layer or Type 1) Key properties Standard: SHW Series 600 — Class 6F2 Particle size (typical): 0/75 mm (option 0/125 mm to project spec) Behaviour: Binds under compaction; non-free-draining Source: Primary or recycled (compliance/testing available on request) Coverage guide (approx., compacted bulk density ≈ 2.0 t/m³) 150 mm depth → ~3.3 m²/tonne 200 mm depth → ~2.5 m²/tonne 300 mm depth → ~1.7 m²/tonne Actual yield varies with rock type, moisture and compaction. Quantity formula Tonnes ≈ (Length × Width × Depth in metres) × 2.0 Installation notes Place in 150–300 mm lifts and compact with suitable heavy plant to the project density (e.g., ≥95% MDD) Moisture-condition for optimal binding; avoid placing in standing water Use a separator geotextile on very soft subgrade to prevent fines migration Finish with Type 1/Type 3 or a regulating layer before trafficking
