Dead Sand

Product Description

“Dead Sand” is a locally used term for a non-spec, fines-rich sand (often a by-product of crushing/washing). It compacts reasonably to form a smooth blinding/regulating layer, but it is not free-draining and not certified to EN 13139 (mortar) or EN 12620 (concrete). Use where an economical fine material is acceptable and the project spec allows a non-certified fill. Typical uses Blinding/levelling over Type 1 or capping prior to slabs/asphalt General backfill and make-up (outside critical embedment/spec zones) Berms, landscaping make-up, farm/yard areas (to be capped) Not for Structural concrete or screed; brick/block mortar; resin systems Pipe bedding/surround unless explicitly permitted by the spec Play sand or equestrian surfaces Key properties (typical) Grading: 0/4 mm or 0/6 mm, fines-rich (variable by source) Behaviour: Binds under compaction; non-free-draining Moisture: variable; may be delivered damp Typical bulk density (compacted): ~1.85–1.95 t/m³ Coverage guide (approx., use 1.9 t/m³) 25 mm depth → ~21 m²/tonne 50 mm depth → ~10.5 m²/tonne 75 mm depth → ~7 m²/tonne Quantity formula Tonnes ≈ (Length × Width × Depth in metres) × 1.9 Installation notes Place in thin lifts; moisture-condition for tight binding Avoid laying in standing water; cap with a suitable sub-base/running surface Use a separator geotextile if there’s a risk of fines migration
